Ceramic inspired cards

[Image ID] A photo of two greetings cards, both feature variations on an orange and black concentric circle design, inspired by ancient pottery. The card on the left has a compass on the central orange circle and the one on the right has a bicycle. [description end]

Two cards using Designer’s Choice 20 – Corsage & Carnations. When I came across this die set what I saw in it had little to do with what it was designed to be and these two cards are based on that initial inspiration. For me, the concentric circles and intricate panels in the set brought to mind ceramics rather than flowers. These particular cards are based on ancient Greek and Roman pottery, but the same idea could be done with other styles and eras.

[Image ID] Close up of the left card The central image is a traditional compass with the 4 main directions marked. The black circle around that is like the holes in the negatives of traditional photo films. There is then a narrow orange circle followed by a black floral lattice effect. The outer circle is orange with a serrated edge like the edge of a fine cog wheel. [description end]

The base of the plate design is die cut from orange paper, the middle black ring was also die cut, but I found it was easier to colour the larger intricate ring with a pen rather than die cut it from black.

[Image ID] Close up of the card on the right The bicycle is stamped in black on an orange circle. There is then a black circle with holes like in the previous card. After the next plain orange ring the final ring has a pattern with raised dots joining the individual elements of the pattern together into a ring. [description end]

I did less die cutting on this card, as the orange circle is a single solid piece, rather than being cut into, with the thin black ring stuck onto it.
This was a really
interesting concept to work with, especially as ‘historical’ designs are few
and far between in the papercrafting world.
