Moonlit Coast

-

[Image ID] A watercolour painting of a coastal scene on a moonlit and starry night. The sky is a deep blue, the crescent moon is white and the tide is out. The foreground of the picture is banks of sand with water inlets between them. In the middle is a small island of sand with a wooden boat resting on top of it. Beyond that, the sea stretches back to the horizon and is framed on either side by cliffs. The left-hand set of cliffs end in a couple of sea arches. [description end]

Although the layout of this scene is from my imagination, it was loosely inspired by the scenery from Genshin Impact - particularly the Falcon Coast. The majority of this painting was completed in one evening, but I ended up finishing it off the next day.

The cloudy sky was produced by layering paint and water in the hope of a nice varied background, although I was still surprised by how well it turned out. I struggled with the sand texture, but eventually found that dotting paint with a fan brush produced a nice effect.

Watercolour pencils were used to add details to the abandoned wooden boat as I find it impossible to get that level of detail with a paintbrush. The moon was deliberately left white throughout the painting process, but at the end I tided up its shape with a paint pen.
