[Image ID] A square birthday card with a blue toned, ink-splodge background. A die-cut decorative panel has been stuck on top. It has a wave pattern on the left side and a floral design on the right. The wave pattern is blue and the flowers are pink. A ‘Happy Birthday’ sentiment has been stuck on at the bottom of the card beneath the panel. [description end]

The background for this card was created using a technique colloquially known as ‘ink smooshing’. Water reactive ink is applied to a piece of flat plastic, then misted with a spray bottle, after which the plastic is flipped upside down and pressed on top of a piece of card. The process is usually repeated several times with different colours for a layered effect. The focal point of this card was originally designed as a decorative side panel for a 3d box, but I frequently use such dies for cards instead. The decorative panels from box making die sets often have lovely patterns and sometimes come in interesting shapes too – such as the ‘squared oval’ on this card.

The focal point has three layers to it; a solid backing panel, and two further layers with the intricate design cut into them. I stuck the first of the intricate panels down before I coloured the design so I could be sure the colour went in the correct places, but the final layer was stuck on when the colouring was finished. This way it neatens everything up and hides where the colour seeped outside the lines.
