Architect Of Spells

Architect Of Spells artwork

[Image ID] There are 3 large water filled tubes in the background but the focal point of the picture is a figure casting a spell. He is holding a book in his right hand and using his left hand to cast the spell. A black haze with red runic characters is stretching out from the book, and forming tendrils around him. He is wearing a long black robe with a white toga which is blowing round him in the wind current caused by the spell. [description end]

The 23rd of July this year will be the 5th anniversary of the final chapter of the Fairy Tail manga being released, and whilst I didn’t specifically paint this piece for the occasion, now seemed a fitting time to post it.

Zeref is undoubtedly my favourite character in the series as the many facets of his personality, in addition to his complex past, have always captured my imagination. When I sketched this piece, I wanted it to convey something of Zeref’s skill with magic. Throughout the series, he was noted to have a great deal of knowledge and skill with the subject, even if it wasn’t often shown directly.

The design of the ‘water tubes’ in the background is based on that seen in the laboratory during the ‘Tartaros arc’ of the story.

I also have a speedpaint timelapse of the painting process on Youtube which can be watched below:

-
Time taken: just over 7 hours
