I really liked the folk art esque design of this watering can die, and so was excited to make some cards with it. I think it is really versatile and can be used for a variety of card themes depending on the colour palette and other elements used.

First card

-

[Image ID] The sentiment on this card is ‘Thinking of you’. The text is white on a black background with each word separate, one above the other, rather than one long rectangle. The text is on the top half of a large brown oval. Most of the bottom half of the oval is covered by a green watering can that has a floral design on the side and is being used to display some brown seed heads. [description end]

This first card has a muted colour scheme to fit the ‘thinking of you’ sentiment I embossed with my Dymo label embosser. I used the ink pad from the kit to colour the front panel of the watering can, and part of the nuvo paper bag (also from the kit) forms the grey backing panel.

The oval in the background was inspired by a card in issue 91 of Die Cutting Essentials magazine, but I put white paper between the strips rather than acetate as I can never get the latter to stick. The foliage dies inside the watering can were freebies with that same magazine.

Second Card

-

[Image ID] The focal point of this birthday card is a grey watering can with a floral design on the side, which is on a background of pink, yellow, green and grey splodges. Some red-pink flowers are displayed out the top left of the can, and a pink and orange bird with a yellow wing is perched on the top of the right hand side of the can. The ‘Happy Birthday’ sentiment, below the watering can, is white text on a bright pink background and the two words are on separate lines one above the other. [description end]

In contrast, this second card has a brightly coloured birthday theme. The front panel of the watering can was cut from the grey nuvo bag, and highlighted with a white gel pen so it looked more like metal. I backed the decorative section on black card to highlight the detail. The flower dies and bird stamp, also from the kit, were coloured separately and then glued onto the watering can. Like with the previous card, I used my Dymo label embosser to create the sentiment. The label embosser is very helpful for sentiments as it creates a ‘textbox’ effect and enables them to still be read over a busy or colourful background.

I created the background of this card using distress inks and the ‘ink smooshing’ technique I have mentioned in a couple of previous posts. There are also a few splodges of the ink from the kit in the background.
