These two cards are inspired by the ‘Stretch Your Stencils’ article in Creative Stamping Magazine issue 110 – particularly the fourth card ‘Lost Without You’. I was drawn to the cards in the article both because the stamp set used was one I already had, and because of the bright colour scheme. Using brighter tones was a fun change for me as I usually gravitate towards more muted palettes.

[Image ID] A birthday card with a nautical theme. The colour scheme is orange, yellow, green, brown and blue. There is a faint net design on the background. On the left side of the card is a blue oblong panel with a fishing net design on it. The ‘Happy Birthday’ sentiment is near the top of the card and slightly offset to the right. The text is white on a brown background with a yellow border. The bottom right corner of the net panel is covered by a shell, a fossil and a compass. [description end]

I created the backgrounds for both cards at once from an A5 piece of paper using ink blending and partial stamping. Once the background was finished I moved on to the two rectangular panels. I didn’t cut them to any particular size, and instead used up some scrap pieces of white card which were left over from other projects. I ink blended them, quite heavily, with a single colour; then embossed the card using a stencil with a wipe on top. When run through the die cutting machine, the stencil presses the pattern into the card, whilst the dampness from the wipe ‘bleached out’ the raised areas of the card that it came into contact with. In order to get the ‘bleached’ effect, it is important to use water reactive inks for the ink blending.

[Image ID] A second nautical themed birthday card with a similar colour scheme to the first one. The panel on this one has a pebble design on it. The ‘Birthday Wishes’ sentiment is on the bottom right of the card and is white embossed lettering on a gold background. A cluster of cogs are to the left of the sentiment and cover the bottom of the pebble panel. A different pebble deign and a compass cover the top right hand corner of the pebble panel. I stamped the rest of the elements for the cards onto yellow paper, then coloured them in with a mixture of Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pens and a white gel pen. Some of the elements are stuck directly onto the card, whilst others have been raised slightly using foam squares. To complete the cards, I applied a variety of colours of Nuvo Drop in several clusters.
