Subterranean Pool

Subterranean Pool artwork

-

[Image ID] A watercolour painting of a subterranean pool. The end of an old wooden boat is sticking out of the water at the far side of the pool. In the foreground; two brown posts, of differing heights, protrude out of the water on either side of the pool. Dark green vines are wrapped round the posts, whilst long, lighter green vines descend from the ceiling to frame the grey, rocky background. [description end]

This piece was the result of several sources of cave related inspiration merging together. The painting stage was done in one sitting, but I added the fineliner details the next day. Aside from the black fineliner, the entire painting was created with just watercolour paints.

As with any painting, I began by painting a light base layer of the main colours roughly where I wanted them. Once the scene’s composition is mapped out with this layer I can add further layers in darker tones or different hues to give the scene some definition.

Hanging vines look great in these kinds of scenes, but are surprisingly hard to paint. It is difficult to make the way they hang appear natural and believable; rather than that someone came along and taped them to the ceiling!
