Art Journal: Remembrance

[Image ID] A double page spread in my art journal for Remembrance Day. Both pages have a spatter effect background in red and creamy pink. The words “We will remember them” are in black lettering at the top of the left page and a white candle in a black lantern is in the bottom left corner of that page. The focal point on the right hand page is a stained glass window reflecting the red and black of remembrance poppies. A 3-D poppy is across the bottom left hand corner of the window and a second one is diagonally opposite at the point where the window starts to curve up to the point at the top of the arch. Since my usual posting day fell on Remembrance Day this year I wanted to share something appropriate for the occasion.

The background was created with a mixture of distress ink and acrylic paint. I splodged the ink across the page first, then brushed on a thin layer of paint over the top to fill in the gaps. The rest of the composition was created with a variety of die cuts. I cut the shapes from white card and coloured them in by ink blending with Distress Inks. However the tartan design behind the window was cut from coloured card.

The window has three layers to it; firstly the frame which I lightly ink blended to a stone-like colour, then I glued a layer of tracing paper behind the frame to act as the 'glass’ before finally adding the tartan-esque black and red pattern behind the tracing paper.

I wrote the ‘we will remember them’ by hand using a black brush pen onto tracing paper. This had to be left to dry for quite some time before I could glue it onto the page as the brush pen remains wet on the tracing paper much longer than normal paper.
