Harbourside Seascape
[Image ID] A watercolour and gouache seascape painting with the setting sun and colourful sky reflected in the sea. There are a couple of hills on the horizon. On the left side of the picture is a building with an awning above a window and two stools under the awning against the wall. In the foreground is a wooden walkway and jetty. [description end]
This imagined harbour and seascape was painted with a
mixture of watercolour and gouache. I used an initial layer of watercolour to
map out the composition and colours of the scene, then added several layers of
gouache on top to intensify the colour and bring out the detail.
In some places the initial watercolour layer is entirely
covered by the subsequent layers of gouache, but in other places it still shows
through to provide highlights and subtleties which are hard to do with the opaque,
and highly pigmented, gouache.
