Stained Glass Shell Cards - TCK 66

[Image ID] A pair of square birthday cards with a shell design on. One is red and one is blue. The sentiment under the shell says ‘On your birthday’. [description end]

I made these two cards using a stamp from Tonic Craft Kit 66 – ‘Sassy Shell Bag’. I really liked the stained glass effect of this stamp, which was designed to match the shape of the bag the kit is intended to make. A version of the intended bag project that I made after these cards can be seen in the image below.

[Image ID] The card background is brown and the shell is red. The shell shape has a decorative floral effect on it. The sentiment is white text on a black background. [description end]

The process for both cards was exactly the same as all I changed was the ink colours. I started with a white 6x6 inch card base and then cut a piece of kraft paper to be slightly smaller than the card base. Then I added splodges of watered down ink across the kraft paper (colloquially referred to as ‘ink smooshing’). I used a mixture of ink types as I thought the differing appearances of the translucent distress inks and more opaque distress oxides was an interesting effect. The script in the background was created by stamping a script text stamp from a 2018 issue of Creative Stamping magazine using water resistant brown ink.

Once the background had dried I stamped the ‘stained glass’ effect stamp from the kit with black ink, then I highlighted some areas of the design with a white gel pen. I used a 0.5 size gel pen for the areas inside the shell, but the outline around the entire shape used a 0.10 for a subtle size contrast. Once the kraft paper panel was complete I glued it onto the card base – it is best not to work directly on the card base as the water can sometimes warp it such that it won’t stand up. The ‘On Your Birthday’ sentiment was embossed with a Dymo label maker.
