Inktober 2024: 5 - Binoculars

‘Binoculars’ was the prompt for this piece, although they ended up as quite a small part of the painting in the end. I liked the idea of a desk and a window looking out on autumnal trees, so tried to incorporate the binoculars and a bird guidebook as though the birdwatcher had just left for a break.

This painting was done with a mixture of watercolour and gouache. I used the watercolour as a first layer, and for the scene outside the window, then layered gouache on top to make the furniture inside the room feel more 'solid' and therefore closer to the camera.
