Hakuryuu: Zagan
As might be clear from the title, this is a ‘companion’ to my previous Magi fan art (which if you missed it can be found by clicking here) as it features Hakuryuu’s other Djinn Equip form – Zagan.
I drew the pencil sketch for this piece at the same time as
the previous one and having done the first digitally I decided I might as well
give this one the same treatment. Compared to the Belial one I was always less
satisfied with how the paper sketch for this turned out, and finishing the
piece digitally made it a lot easier to fix issues like the head originally
being too big.
Although the details in this form – especially at this angle
– are ‘simpler’ than the Belial one I actually found this one more challenging.
Dark colours are generally harder to get the detail and shading into, and for a
while I was concerned that the fur texture on his back and arm would merge
together too much. The fluffy ‘ponytail’ (for want of a better description)
behind his head is also quite hard to understand the form and shape of from the
simple black and white line illustrations of the manga.
If you’ve seen the previous illustration you may have
noticed that the first line of text is the same as the previous illustration –
since Hakuryuu’s name doesn’t change – but the second row is different since
this is the ‘Zagan’ form rather than the ‘Belial’ one.
Below is a GIF image showing a few stages of the process for
the painting.
I have also created a speedpaint timelapse for this painting
which can be watched below or on my YouTube channel:
