I’ve really enjoyed the recent parts of Genshin Impact’s story and especially the growing friendship between Wanderer (left) and Durin (right). Sadly we so far haven’t seen them directly fight side by side on screen, so I decided to paint it instead.
Early on in the sketching process I used a coloured multiply
layer to apply the purple tone from the background across the character colours
as a way to try and make their vastly different colour palettes fit together
better.
I kept the background very simple, just a partially cloudy
starry sky with a small central moon. The primary reason I stuck to such a
minimal background was to let the eye focus on the characters without being
distracted by a landscape behind them. However it also felt like an apt choice
since the recent parts of the game’s story have related to the moon.
Genshin Impact’s character designs are incredibly detailed,
which can make painting them challenging as not only is there a lot to paint
but it can also make it hard for the eye to know where to focus.
The part of the painting I’m most pleased with is Wanderer’s
face as I feel like I managed to capture his hair and expression fairly
accurately. For those unfamiliar with the game who might be wondering why his
hands and knees have some odd-looking lines, it’s because his body is like a
ball-jointed doll and although the joints aren’t visibly depicted in game I
like to include them whenever I paint him.
