Moonlit Night

Moonlit Night artwork
[Image ID] Digital painting of two characters sat on a rock on a moonlit night. [description end]

This piece started out as only the left half of the scene on a portrait canvas, however I’d been wanting to do an up to date painting with both Kyan and Kiyoshi in for a while so I decided to expand it to include them both. Beyond that, this painting doesn’t have much ‘story’ or ‘emotion’ behind it, although the distance between them does unintentionally fit some parts of the story quite well.

I found the background quite challenging on this one. Rocks are strangely hard to paint and it took me two or three attempts, with weeks and months between when I didn’t look at the painting at all, to get the rocks to a point I was happy. At one point the painting become much too dark such that it lost the wintery feeling I’d loved in the sketch, but thankfully digital painting is very forgiving and I could simply delete the dark layers and do the lighting again.

Below is a GIF image showing a few stages of the process for the painting.
